Frequently Asked Questions

Questions you may have

When will the school close?

The last day of scheduled classes will be December 22, 2020. The classrooms and office of SDCI will close to the public on that date.

We will continue to support our students on Externship via phone and email (see Contact Us) until they complete their graduation requirements. We expect all students to complete their programs no later than February 29, 2020.

What does this mean for current students of SDCI?

For the most part, it is business as usual for all currently enrolled students. All current students are set to attend classes and complete their programs as scheduled. This change may, however, limit your ability to take a Leave of Absence from school or affect your ability to make up classes, should you need to do so.

If for any reason, there is any possibility that you may have an unavoidable need to take a Leave of Absence for any reason, speak with Chef Lewis immediately. We have resources to manage a wide variety of circumstances but every day that passes limits what we can do to accommodate this kind of a need. It will be important going forward that you pass your exams. If you need any extra help with any of the material, speak with Chef Lewis immediately so that we can get you the help you need to pass your exams with flying colors. We, the staff of SDCI, are committed to giving our students the resources they need to graduate on time.

If you are a student on Leave or you have voluntarily withdrawn from school within the last 12 months and you wish to return and complete your graduation requirements, contact Chef Lewis or Jaycee immediately so that we can begin to make the necessary arrangements.

Again, we have secured resources to accommodate students in this situation, but timing is critical. The sooner you begin the process, the more options we have for accommodating you.

Will students graduate with the same credentials as always?

Yes. SDCI continues to award the same type of diploma that we have always issued.

I need a copy of my transcript. Where can I get that?

The best way to get a copy of your transcript is to order one from SDCI now. You may order up to three sealed copies free of charge if you order them no later than November 15, 2019. After November 15, they will be subject to a charge of $10 per transcript.

As of December 22, 2019, we will provide the student records of every student that has attended any of our diploma programs to the state licensing bureau, BPPE (Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education — on the web: www.bppe.ca.gov). We recommend you contact the Closed Schools division, but we do not know for certain what their procedures will be.

We intend to maintain a presence on the internet and on Facebook indefinitely. We will happily do what we can to assist people that contact us there, but our ability to help may become increasingly limited as time goes by. The sooner you get in touch, the more resources we will have available to help you.

Is SDCI still accredited?

Yes, we are accredited and ACCET, our accreditor, has confirmed that accreditation to ensure that every student currently in school (that successfully completes their program of study) will graduate from an accredited school.

Our closure does not in any way diminish the value of the diplomas we issue this year and next, nor does it impact the value of any of the diplomas we have issued over the 19-year history of this school.

I have already graduated from SDCI. Is my diploma still valid?

Absolutely. SDCI has operated as a licensed institution since we first opened our doors and has been accredited for most of our tenure. Our curriculum has been reviewed and received high marks from ACCET at each accreditation renewal. SDCI’s curriculum, our educational processes, our internal office procedures, and — most importantly — our ability to graduate and place students have all been reviewed and confirmed by the accreditor. All of this contributes to the value of your diploma as a meaningful credential and evidence of your accomplishments as a graduate of SDCI.

More importantly, SDCI graduates have, on the whole, excelled in all areas of the culinary arts. Their hard work has been the key in cultivating our alumni’s reputation for excellence.

Demand to hire SDCI graduates has never been higher than it is today. Our extensive network of employers has seen first-hand the value of a worker with an SDCI diploma. That value isn’t about to change.

Where can I go to receive career assistance?

All SDCI graduates will continue to have access to career guidance assistance from the President and the Chef Instructors indefinitely — that is, pretty much so long as we're around to give it to you. We will provide ways to reach us through the website, Facebook, etc. (see Contact Us)
